Hard water creates major problems with deposits in pipes and household appliances. Salt (NaCl) is used to switch the hard water ions (calcium and magnesium) to the soft ion Sodium. This is done in softening filter (regeneration filter), where plastic bullets are loaded with sodium ions (salt tablets dissolved in water which may flow through the container with bullets). When raw water is released through, replacing the Na ions and the hard ions stick to the balls.
