We have been trading in salt for more than 175 years. In 1905 Olof H. Hanson took over the business, and since then the company has developed under the management of the Hanson family. We have gone from being a local salt importer to becoming Europe's largest independent salt distributor. Our main focus is put on trade, storage, distribution and processing of salt products. We make use of our long experience and deep knowledge of salt in our four business areas: Salinity De-Icing Solutions, Salinity Retail & Foods, Salinity Agro/Industry/Water and Salinity Coal. In the Wake of SaltSomebody has said that salt is our fifth element, just as essential to life as earth, air, fire and water. In many ways this is actually true since we are continuously surrounded by salt. The salt in our bodies is absolutely necessary for our cells to function properly, and in our surroundings natural or processed salt is used for practically everything: cooking, manufacturing pharmaceuticals, de-icing winter roads, fertilizing fields, making soap, de-liming water, producing plastics etc. The modern day salt industry speaks of some 14 000 different fields of application. Today more than 250 million tons of salt are produced annually worldwide. No wonder it is easy to take salt for granted. But salt has played an important role historically. Wars have been fought over salt, but it has also been used as a symbol of life and peaceful coexistence. Salt has inspired chefs as well as writers and artists. It is a commodity, a remedy, a seasoning and a preservative. The history of salt is fascinating, and at Salinity we are proud to be a part of it. |
