Dust binding is a wise and cost-effective investment in your gravel road. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, both hygroscopic salts, absorb moisture from the air and form a saline solution that penetrates into the wear layer and surrounds the gravel particles with a moist film. Since the saline solution has a higher surface tension and lower vapor pressure than water, the moisture remains in the road even at high temperatures and drought.
